Sunday, Bloody Sunday

By the Numbers –
. . . . . . . 1,331 days and counting
. . . . . . . $7.8 trillion in National Debt
. . . . . . . $172.9 billion for the fool’s errand in Iraq
. . . . . . . 1,657 American casualties in Iraq, let us never forget them or their sacrifice.

Today’s Quote(s) –
. . . . . . . “Insist on yourself; never imitate... Every great man is unique.”
Ralph Waldo EmersonUS essayist & poet (1803 - 1882)
. . . . . . . “Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe” – Bruce Springsteen – American Poet & Songwriter
Today’s Rant –
. . . . . . . Memorial Day weekend – Take a moment sometime this weekend to stop and give thanks to a soldier, or the memory of one in your family. Remember, you can be against a particular war (as I am against this one, prosecuted for false reasons and good, brave U.S. citizens put in harm’s way for a personal vendetta) and support other causes and wars. You can hate the civilian commanders who make such wrong-headed decisions that cost lives uselessly. You can disagree with everything and be vocal about it, but it is a soldier that you have to thank for the right to do that. Our young men and women selflessly and often thanklessly put on the uniform and take orders and do their job. It’s our job to support them, to insure that proper respect and care is given to them, and what they are owed is repaid once they return home. I don’t want to hear any crap at all about conscience or refusing orders. If you’ve never served, you don’t understand, once you put the uniform on and take the oath, that’s it. You take orders and you do the job, period. Make sure to shake the hand of the next person in uniform that you see and to take a moment of silent respect to remember those fallen under our flag.
. . . . . . . Excellent article by Eric Alterman over here at The Nation on exactly what I’ve been screaming about since 9/11. He outlines in detail exactly what the idiot occupying the Oval Office hasn’t done. As I’ve stated over and over, absolutely nothing substantive or real has been done to protect us by the Gang that Couldn’t Talk Straight. Every condition that existed pre-9/11 still exists, and Bin Laden (the real criminal, remember him?) still roams free, heading Al Queda and planning more attacks.
. . . . . . . Check this one out over in the Financial Times of London. I had absolutely no clue about it. The article details how a coalition of disparate groups from across the political and idealogical spectrum have been meeting since last October to come up with some real, workable solution to the growing number of Americans who are uninsured by health care providers.
. . . . . . . Believe it or don’t, doesn’t matter to me, however, in the eyes of many, including this writer, today is absolutely critical for the future history of the United States. Today, The French hold the fate of our country in their hands. Don’t get it? Today, Sunday, the French vote on the EU constitution with their notoriously fickle, wrong-headed little brains headed to polls. Remember this is a country that hates us unreasonably, but will drop their pants for any old Army marching in, then scream for us to rescue them when the date goes all wrong. How does it tie to our fate? The EU stands a chance of eclipsing America as the next hyperpower, if they can get it together on a Constitution. Today, the fickle French, in a few days, the Dutch hold the same power as they vote. Two points, the Euro could easily surpass the U.S. dollar as the world currency of choice by summer’s end if the EU can provide a stable, united economic environment for it to flourish for one reason, less dependence on hostile trading partners for oil. The EU uses far less oil than we do, and has maintained at least reasonably friendly relations with the Middle East by adopting a “hands-off” approach. Second point, you don’t think the older nations of the EU wouldn’t secretly like to give the U.S. a good spanking for a host of 200-year old resentments? Think again.
. . . . . . . Please take some time to go over the The Huffington Post and read some of today’s postings. Especially Adam McKay's blog posting which rather succinctly ties up how there is actually very little difference between what the Left and the Right (the majority of us, not the extremes at either end that are running things right now) really, really want and we’re not that far apart and that’s it’s time to stop lobbing smelly sacks of dogshit at one another. Take the time, if you can, to read a second one, Tom Hayden's posting which details some real good reasons for both the Left and the Right to come together and call for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

. . . . . . . That damn 30th high-school reunion. I think part of the nagging in the back of my brain has to do with unmet expectations and that fact that who I am today is a far cry from the “me” than and the residual truth that those who knew me than most likely still carry around, just as I do of them. Sound complicated? It is. Simply put, what folks thought I would do with myself didn’t happen. Instead, I became me.

Friday before Memorial Day weekend (It's always rainy and cold up here in the Great Lakes)

By the Numbers –
. . . . . . . 1,333 days left, unless we get lucky and he gets impeached.
. . . . . . . $7.8 trillion in National Debt that will come due on our grandchildren
. . . . . . . $172.5 billion spent in Iraq. $8 billion unaccounted for (anyone check Halliburton's expense and entertainment accounts? Just asking!)
. . . . . . . 1,653 American soldiers who paid with their lives for Bush's bullheaded vendetta.

Today's quote –
. . . . . . . "Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards. "
Lois McMaster Bujold, "A Civil Campaign", 1999

Today's Rant –
. . . . . . . Do not ever make the mistaken assumption that my utter loathing of Dubya and the Gang That Couldn't Talk Straight, along with his backers down at the CBN corral, the Elmer Gantry Bunch and their wrong-headed, misguided military adventure in Iraq for disrespect for the fine young men and women citizens of this nation who very bravely put on the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. They deserve mine and yours highest regard, along with their families. Foolishly, I also believe that they deserve the utmost respect and regard from their commanders and war planners. Once again, Rumsfeld and his bunch of civilian war planners, not one of whom has ever worn a uniform or seen combat have put our soldiers at risk with their complete incompetence. Bill Gertz, one of the best, if not the absolute best, investigative reporter that this nation has, reports in his latest column about private efforts by an organization called AmericanSnipers.org that is putting necessary gear for American snipers in Iraq in the hands of the soldiers who need it since the logistic "experts" in Rumsfeld's organization cannot seem to get these soldiers outfitted with basic sniper equipment like, oh say, scopes and tripods, just little "extras" that are the basic equipment necessary for a sniper to fulfill his function. So far, they've put together $400K to equip these soldiers. Damn, here I thought that my tax dollars were actually going for things the military needed to keep themselves safe and perform their duty. Snipers have become one of the military's most valuable assets in Iraq against the roadside bomb attacks and are an absolute necessity with every convoy and Forward Support Company. Smells like unarmored humvees to me. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck . . . . you know the rest.

. . . . . . . Looks like Bush's effort to ramrod John Bolton down the American people's and the rest of the world's throat is still running into roadblocks. The vote was once again successfully delayed yesterday, forcing the vote back into June sometime. Questions still remain about Bolton's misuse and abuse of power and his complete inability to treat the intelligence community with any respect.

. . . . . . . The noose is tightening around Tom Delay's political misadventures and shenanigans. The New York Times in an article this morning details the guilty verdict and a $200K fine against the finance officer of his PAC for breaking campaign finance laws. The bloodhounds are on the trail and it won't be long till they catch up to this fleeing felon. He's gotta be sweatin' it about now.

. . . . . . . I must agree with Ralph Neas. In a recent entry on his blog on the The Huffington Post website he does some explaining about the angst that the Extreme Christian Conservative Right is feeling over Monday's bipartisan political compromise that found neutral ground and kept the Senate "Nuclear Option" from being put into play. I won't repeat or plagiarize, go read it. I agree with him, anything at all that causes a wailing and gnashing of teeth over in the James C. Dobson camp is a good thing and deserves to be examined.

. . . . . . . God I love being a native Michigander! No irony there, I mean it. We are some of the toughest, no compromise badasses around. Don't believe it, come live here with the weather we have and try putting in 20-30 years worth of shifts in the auto industry. There ain't nothin' like driving to work at 5 AM with a half-million angry, caffeine fueled line workers. We breed 'em tough. John Conyers, one of my favorite Congressional representatives, fresh off of taking on the Ohio electoral vote fraud, yesterday launched a website called After Downing Street.org which is a coalition of veteran's groups, activists and citizens all calling for an official inquiry into the President's actions in light of the The Downing Street Memo which was released by the Times of London after if got it's hands on it. The memo details how Bush secretly planned to invade Iraq and remove Hussein, at that point, fully planning to use WMD as a cover and was making intelligence fit the reasoning and expected outcomes and knew full well that there were no WMD in Iraq. The website is a coalition effort that is calling for a full investigation to fact-find and see if there are impeachable offenses. Go John!

. . . . . . . Back to this damn 30th reunion thing which is buzzing around my brain like an annoying gnat. Ok, so I joined the damn Classmates.com website so I could get the announcements, etc. This one is bugging me, just what the hell is it about people that I haven't seen for 30 years that has me so nervous? For Chrissake, I have longer term relationships built up with everyone else in my life than the 4 years that I spent with them. Could it be that the hopes and dreams that we all had, the expectations of what we all expected one another to go on and do probably haven't worked out and we've all taken the path that our destiny and karma was sending us down? Oh well, maybe I think too much. Who the hell cares what people from 30 years ago will think when all I'm going to spend is a couple of hours in a banquet hall catching up on who's fat, who's bald, who's broke and who died? God, I sound just like a little kid whistling past the graveyard.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday

By the Numbers –
. . . . . . . .1,334 days left ‘til the Earth’s axis is right again
. . . . . . . . $7.8 trillion in National Debt
. . . . . . . . $172.4 billion pissed away in the sands of Iraq
. . . . . . . . 1,651 young American citizen-soldiers dead for a worthless cause
. . . . . . . . 6' 6" the height of a certain Saudi terrorist and murderer on dialysis that we still can’t seem to find, that the above damn mess was started for, and for whom retribution is still due.

Today’s quote –
. . . . . . . “All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.”
Sir Winston ChurchillBritish politician (1874 - 1965)
The Rant –
. . . . . . . .God bless Molly Ivins. Her beautiful sense of irony and her grasp of the current political scene, combined with a good down home Texas sensibility make reading her an absolute joy. Very few other writers could have me laughing at the sheer absurdity of some of the current situations. We still can’t find Bin Laden, the army has misplaced an ungodly number of airplanes and tanks and over a billion dollars in Iraq, we’ve got liberals for good old fashioned stump thumping filibustering, and conservatives against it, and the definition of activist judge seems to be a daily fluid thing. Please follow the link and read her, it’s painful, but the laughter makes it worthwhile.
. . . . . . . Please make the The Huffington Post a regular stop for your reads. Arianna has put together an insightful, incisive bunch of wordsmiths. Maybe all of it won’t be for you, but guaranteed, at least some it will be.
. . . . . . . Anyone besides me notice that “The Social Security Crisis” has taken a backseat to the “Nuclear Option Crisis” which shoved the John Bolton nomination out of the spotlight. Look out, the missing armament and dollars are looking to take over the headlines tomorrow. Jeez, can’t Rove, Delay and Frist just manufacture them fast enough to keep our attention diverted. Really, it’s not a case of sleight-of-hand or legerdemain; it’s just their complete ineptness has finally caught up with them. Personally I’m enjoying it; it’s like watching the old Ed Sullivan show with that annoying plate spinner. The 17th one is coming at these guys fast and they just ain’t gonna be able to keep them in the air long enough.
. . . . . . . More on that damn 30th reunion is on my mind. It’s not nostalgia, or wistfulness. I truly wonder if anyone else has lead the same kind of internal life in the last 3 decades. I still firmly believe that at some point, the eternal quest that all good Midwestern rock-n-rollers with a passion for cars and bikes is the one that can best be described as a walk down the Bruce Springsteen rock and roll redemption road. I’ve been successful, I’ve lead a good life, but there are still nights when I can’t sleep, staring at the ceiling, going back over all the mistakes that I made with my wife and sons, the people I’ve hurt mindlessly or inadvertently while being self-absorbed, damn this sucks.

When is it gonna be spring for chrissake??!!

HELLO!!! I’M BAAAAAACK!

. . . . . . .1,335 more days ‘til we can save the Republic again.
. . . . . . . $7.8 trillion in National Debt
. . . . . . . $172.1 billion pissed away in Iraq
. . . . . . . $9 billion of the taxpayer’s (your) money unaccounted for in the above figure
. . . . . . . 1,649 U.S. troops sacrificed so we can be amused by pictures on Saddam in tighty whities.

TODAY’S QUOTES:

. . . . . . . No constitution, no court, no law can save liberty when it dies in the hearts and minds of men. - John Perkins

. . . . . . . Tonight this fool’s halfway to heaven, just a mile out of hell and I feel like I’m comin’ home. These are better days – Bruce Springsteen

. . . . . . . "One does not sell the land people walk on."... Crazy Horse, Sept. 23, 1875

TODAY’S RANT(S) –
. . . . . . . Been off line and away from this column and blog for about 6 weeks now. I tore the ligaments in my arms up lifting my decrepit, smelly old best friend in and out of the house during the late spring in crappy weather when his hind legs stiffened up on him. Couldn’t really go on medical because (1) I’m management, we don’t go on medical (stupid reason, I know, don’t start) and (2) somehow trying to get a disability medical with lifting your poor old dog in and out of the house as an excuse just don’t fly anywhere. Anyhoo, since my job involves over half my day at a keyboard as it is, I just really didn’t have it in me to type at night when I got home and it also meant no gym, which absolutely drove me nuts. At the point now where typing is good rehab, so, it’s off to the races once more ladies and gents.
. . . . . . . John McCain , as far as I’m concerned, sewed up the 2008 presidential nomination with Monday’s blockbuster deal that saved the Senate. McCain has been screwed over and and over by the Republican party and I’m sure his deal did not make Rove or Cheney happy, but it saved the American people the embarrassment of watching the Senate grind to a halt over the “nuclear option”.
. . . . . . . . People think I’m anti-Republican when they read this column. I’m not. I’m anti-Bush, anti-Rumsfeld, anti-Rove, anti-Rice, anti-Cheney, anti-Wolfowitz, anti-Delay, anti-Frist and most of all I’m anti-Dobson, anti-Robertson and anti-Falwell. I shudder at the hijacking of the American political process by the above-named bunch of looney-tunes Neo-Conservatives and Christian Conservatives. It was interesting to watch Trent Lott align himself with McCain and Sen. Pryor (Democrat) last night while on CNN and distance himself from sleazeballs DeLay and Frist.
. . . . . . . .Speaking of Dobson, did anyone catch his over the top reaction to the news of the filibuster deal? “A complete bailout and betrayal by a cabal of Republicans," absolutely loved the talk of retribution coming from this purveyor of Christian love and forgiveness who promised that voters will remember “the Democrats and Republicans who betrayed their trust”. What a dick! Turn the other cheek James, we’re getting tired of seeing that side of your ass!
. . . . . . . Got news that my high school 30 year reunion is coming up. Can’t really tell how I feel about that right now, nor what it’s stirring up, but it’s stirring up something. Amazing how 4 short years of your life can have such an impact 30 years later. Consider that those people I went to school with vs . the long-term friendships of 15 to 20 years that I’ve held since and it’s absolutely disgusting how nostalgic, warm and fuzzy this particular black-wearing, permanent bad mood non-smiling badass gets. Should be interesting. Christ, I even hauled out my old yearbook and signed up on Classmates.com. Jesus, that’s sick! What’s wrong with me?
. . . . . . . Outta here, good to be back!
